Obesity in Children

Posted by administrator Friday, May 20, 2011 1 comments

Obesity means an excess amount of body fat. No general agreement exists on the definition of obesity in children as it does adults. Most professionals use published guidelines based on the body mass index(BMI), or a modified BMI for age, to measure obesity in children. Others define obesity in children as body weight at least 20% higher than a healthy weight for a child of that height, or a body fat percentage above 25% in boys or above 32% in girls.
Although rare in the past, obesity is now among the most widespread medical problems affecting children and adolescents living in the United States and other developed countries. About 15% of adolescents (aged 12-19 years) and children (aged 6-11 years) are obese in the United States according to the American Obesity Association. The numbers are expected to continue increasing. Childhood obesity represents one of our greatest health challenges.
Obesity has a profound effect on a child's life. Obesity increases the child's risk of numerous health problems, and it also can create emotional and social problems. Obese children are also more likely to be obese as adults, increasing their risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke.
If your child is overweight, further weight gain can be prevented. Parents can help their children keep their weight in the healthy range.
  • In infancy, breastfeeding and delaying introduction of solid foods may help prevent obesity.
  • In early childhood, children should be given healthful, low-fat snacks and take part in vigorous physical activity every day. Their television viewing should be limited to no more than seven hours per week (which includes video games and the Internet).
  • Older children can be taught to select healthy, nutritious foods and to develop good exercise habits. Their time spent watching television and playing with computer or video games should be limited to no more than seven hours each week. Avoid snacking or eating meals while watching TV, movies, and videos.

How You Can Win the Fight Against Obesity

Posted by administrator Tuesday, January 25, 2011 0 comments

The number of Americans suffering from obesity keep rising. Many problems contribute to the situation, which makes it hard to find a plan to fight it. I can tell you from experience that you can do it.
1) Consult Professional Help: You can do it alone, but having help will make it easier. Your doctor can determine what type of exercises are right for you, and give you a suggested schedule. A nutritionist can help you avoid the biggest trap in weight loss, the dreaded "Famine Mode." A personal trainer can show you how to do the exercises correctly so you can avoid injuries.
2) 10,000 Step A Day Program: According to MSNBC, Americans walk an average of just over 5100 steps a day. The 10,000 step a day program was designed to increase that amount. It's very simple. Put a step counter on when you get up in the morning. When you get to work, school or other areas, park as far away from your destination as possible. This small thing can greatly increase your average. Better yet, don't drive. If it's close enough, go ahead and walk.
3) Accurate Calorie Counting: Some diet plans tell you that you don't need to count calories, but I have found that to be inaccurate. A good calorie counter will tell you both how much you've eaten and how much you've burned. This is another tool to help you avoid Famine Mode, which comes when you don't eat enough. It is also helpful in preventing snacking, as you'll lhave to put down what you ate. Those French fries don't look all that good in print.
4) Nutrition Labels: I harp on this a lot, but only because of the extreme importance of them. You may be surprised at the number of calories, fat, sodium and other dietary problems of your favorite products. I've given up quite a few because the numbers are so bad.
5) Several Short Sessions: If you get bored easily, or have little time for long workouts, take several short ones. A ten minute walk down three times a day gets thirty minutes of cardio in. You can also choose other exercises, such as hiking or bike riding to keep the boredom factor away.
There is one other thing you will need, and that's support. Try to engage your family in this lifestyle change. If they won't, find a support group and go to the sessions. Listening to others talk about the same problems you have will make you feel better, and someone may have an answer to any particular problems you have.

Obesity and Overweight - They Don't Mean the Same Thing

Posted by administrator Sunday, October 4, 2009 0 comments

In order to explain why been overweight and be obese are different, I must start defining these terms.
The medical community defines overweight as an excess about of body weight.
However, this includes: fat, muscle, bones and water.
While obesity is defined as an excess amount of body fat.
So, as you can see, overweight not always means an unhealthy person, or even a weight problem.
For example, an athlete who has a large amount of muscle mass, as a wrestler, a football player, a weight lifter, all of them can be overweight in a healthy manner, and they are not obese.
So, we need to understand than obesity isn't a cosmetic problem, it's a health problem, a serious one, even for children.
Being obese all your body must work harder in order to carry the extra pounds of body fat. This includes your lungs, heart, kidney and skeleton.
I remember when I was pregnant; to carry anything more than my own body (as groceries bags) was almost a torture: my feet and knees hurt me, my heart bit increase, I feel exhausted very fast, and my own consolation was thinking all these will finish in a few months, but just think about carry all that weight permanently!
Some health problems related to obesity are:
Cancers
Diabetes
Heart diseases
Hypertension
Respiratory problems
Osteoarthritis
Psychological and social negative effects
Asthma
Depression
Gout
Menstrual irregularities
Pregnancy complications
Strokes
Now that we see some of the main health problems related with been obese, I will tell you good news: Even a small reduction on your weight can improve many of the health problems you already suffer.
People usually use Overweight and Obese as synonymous, but actually they're not having the same signification. One means a health problem, the other maybe not...
Maybe you feel terrible when you see your own image on a mirror, but that mirror didn't reflect the real problem, the real problem it's inside of you.

So now you’ve lost the flab you were trying to lose for years and won the battle of the bulge. But there are still some nasty leftovers – the sagging skin, the bat-wings and the pooch belly hanging down to your thighs.

Even after your massive weight loss, you’re not done. There's one more step before the new skinny you emerges. Plastic surgery can help tuck a little here and nip a little there, until your body is the perfect shape.

The Plastic Surgery Solution
The most common plastic surgery procedures for body contouring are thigh lift and body lift. Both procedures remove excess fat and tissue that is still hanging around after massive weight loss.

While the thigh lift works on the upper legs, the body lift adjusts a little bit of everything. The body lift is actually a combination operation, including several different procedures rolled into one. There may be a tummy tuck, an arm lift, some work on the thighs, and whatever else your doctor recommends. It is total body contouring.

Combination operations are becoming more and more popular. Some people wonder if it's safe to have multiple plastic surgery operations done at once. A body lift is perfectly safe; each operation is done on a smaller scale than usual, so the overall impact on your body is minimal.

Staying Skinny after Your Plastic Surgery
Unfortunately, plastic surgery isn't the end. In order to keep yourself skinny and healthy, you've got to make a plan for a healthy new lifestyle, and stick to it. Sounds tough? It's not at all. Once you see the new you in the mirror, you'll never want to go back!

The fact is that many who have won the battle, put the weight back on. Here are some simple steps to make sure you stay victorious.

Watch portion sizes - We love to eat more than we should, but this is one of the big reasons for the national weight problem. Remember that your daily meat portion should be about the size of your fist, and you can stop eating before you feel full.

It's not just how you eat, but what you eat - Watch out for high fat and high calorie foods. Carbohydrates are the biggest problem, especially in winter time. You shouldn't eat more calories than you burn everyday.

...And when you eat - Doctors recommend a big breakfast, big lunch and light dinner. You don't have a chance to burn what you eat at night.

Drinking is important too - How often do you drink water? Water is still the best drink on earth, and it's definitely much better than those sugary drinks that we love so much.

Don't forget to exercise - Even if you're not that into exercise, try walking everyday. Walking is a great way to burn fat and excess calories. 30-60 minutes of walking everyday will get you all the exercise you need to keep the weight off.

Losing weight and getting your body shaped with plastic surgery will change your life. Don't let it change back after your thigh lift, body lift or other plastic surgery. Make sure your lifestyle keeps you fit and trim. It's easier than you think!

Here's how to reduce fat if you're not losing weight... but you're eating good while exercising a bunch. I want you to totally drop the idea that weight loss is ALL ABOUT diet and exercise. IT ISN'T! I'm going to give you the solution to your weight loss problems.

How to Reduce Fat

1. Your hormones may be the problem that's holding you back from losing weight

To solve this, you need to spin around like a child. NO KIDDING! Seriously, do it because spinning has the uncanny ability to balance your hormones really quick when you repeatedly do them.

I'll give you 1 major tip when it comes to spinning... be sure to stop when you get slightly dizzy. Anything beyond that is a waste of time and can even negate all the positive benefits of spinning itself.

2. The problem may be with medications you're taking

Over-the-counter medications as well as prescription medications are becoming an epidemic. Most of these pills are worthless and only COVER UP your symptoms of whatever the problem is. They usually don't solve it.

Now with weight loss, these medications mess up your hormones. When those get out of control, weight loss is almost impossible and weight gain is usually what will happen. Birth control, cholesterol, and blood pressure pills are the most serious offenders.

The solution is simple... phase off those pills if possible. Talk to your doctor and see what options you have.

3. Drink more water if you're retaining water

You can lose 3-5 pounds quick by drinking more water. By drinking more water, your body dumps out all the water it's retaining. Know this... you body retains water because "it thinks" water is scarce and it wants to protect you with this extra supply of water.

Since water probably isn't scarce for you, that's bad news. But the good news is you can trick the body into thinking water is plentiful by drinking more of it. Once you do that, the body releases the extra water almost immediately.

How to reduce fat and weight is easy when you use these 3 tips consistently.

If you're SICK and TIRED of getting the same old boring weight loss advice... you know, like "Eat more fruits and vegetables, drink 8 glasses of water, jog, and blah blah blah", then...

Best Fat Burners

Posted by administrator 1 comments

What the "Heck" are the Best Fat Burners? If your overweight or obese this is an almighty common question flooding weight loss forums and dieting journals worldwide. Whatever our excess weight, searching for the best fat burners is now "THE" most common query amongst wanna-b dieters.

Lets think philosophically shall we for one moment and try to answer the burning question of the most efficient way to lose weight.

No-one can refute that the easiest way to lose weight is to consume a well balanced diet accompanied with regular exercise, along with required rest and relaxation.

Well - Fat Burning Pills, Weight Loss Pills,... Blockers, Binders, Burners, - whatever you want to call them - Provide a Short Cut. It is no myth that they don't work, it's just about choosing the right ones to put in your body.

* Which are the Best Fat Burners - Prescription or Natural?

Well, fat burning pills can be divided into 2 Categories: Prescribed - or - Over the Counter. Would it interest you in knowing which are the best of these fat burners?

Consider this: If Alli claims to block 25% of dietary fats from your meals then these are "clinically proven" results. This means it has been clinically tested by real individuals who get paid to partake in clinical trials and the results, if proven to be safe and successful, are then medically endorsed by the medical community and the F.D.A (Food and Drugs Association).

But prescription fat burners are far from perfect. Most come with "treatment effects" as the weight loss industry put it. These can include oily complexions, irritable bowels, loose stools.. and a bunch of irregular effects on brain and sleeping patterns.

At the same time, prescription weight loss pills are essentially used to treat obesity which itself presents dangers to your health. As the side effects of some of the best fat burning pills go hand in hand, doctors who treat obesity, advise of their potential symptoms, yet prescribe them as they are probably the only effective way to lose weight.

Not all weight loss fat burning supplements, whether sold over the counter or through prescription back up what they claim though. Have you noticed their amazing promises of "guaranteed" fat burning weight loss on a daily basis, which will lead to permanent weight loss: It's a Proven Fact!

Ummm,.... well it sure isn't. Mostly because they don't support these claims with clinical facts. If it doesn't have the specific medical endorsements you cannot know for sure whether it will burn your fat, increase your metabolism, or it's simply just a placebo.

Another point of concern are the natural or herbal ingredients.

Does Natural mean safe? Consider this when choosing fat burning pills: Clenbuterol or Ephedra were once "THE" most popular fat burners on the market.

Do you remember the "Size Zero Pill"? Originally designed to treat asthma for horses. This little puppy really got the heart racing, so much so, that even some celebrities were soon developing serious eating disorders due to it's powerful appetite suppressant.

The F.D.A soon discovered this fat burner to be extremely unsafe to our nervous system and its sister drug, Ephedra, was banned and Clenbuterol then became a prescription drug only in the U.S and banned in some European countries.

So our advice in choosing natural supplements, so as to attain the best fat burners, would be to check first that they have been clinically tested and have strong, successful testimonials from the weight loss community.

Undoubtedly, the leader among natural weight loss pills in 2007 was Proactol - clinically tested and acknowledged by health professionals and customers as a safe and good fat burning pill and fat blocking pill.

* Weight Loss Slimming Pills Action Types:

Weight loss slimming pills can be divided into various Actions:

Appetite Suppressants:

Appetite suppressants are one of the oldest ways to treat dieting and weight loss and there are a number of reputable brands out there. Remember: always check with those that have undergone clinical trials.

Hoodia Gordonii was the first major hit in the weight loss market. Derived from the natural extracts of the Hoodia Plant, originally used for centuries by local cultures and communities, it has now been patented and is now a popular suppressant and additional supplement among dieters.

Fat Burners and Blockers:

Fat burners work by helping the body break down fat in the digestive track. Once released the fat then enters the blood stream where the fatty acids are then burned in the muscle.

Some fat burners act solely by burning the fat at an increased rate, whilst some also block specific fat and carbohydrate material in your diet.

In this instance, fats and/or carbs that are usually absorbed in the stomach, are restricted from being broken down and then pass through your intestine and out of your system.

Both Proactol and Alli are fat blockers which their clinical trials approve over 25% fat blocking capabilities.

Alli, (a softer version to Xenical which has more powerful "treatment effects".) is F.D.A approved and is sold over the counter in the U.S. But whilst dieting using this fat burner/blocker, it is advised that you stick to a dietary fat intake of 15mgs per each meal, as otherwise loose bowel and stool side effects are felt.

As a fat blocker and burner, acting somewhat like Alli, but free from the side effects, Proactol is now the leading fat burning/blocking pill. It acts safely and helps lose weight safely and steadily over a period of time whatever your dietary intake.

The conclusion is simple - choose well known brands that are clinically tested and deliver positive results. There is no quick fix way to lose weight but weight loss pills, which combine both fat burning and fat blocking capabilities do help you lose weight more effectively.

Weight Gain and Loss in Obese Children

Posted by administrator Tuesday, July 22, 2008 0 comments

There is considerable hype in the news about the incidence of childhood obesity and the risks. At the present time it is estimated that close to one third of the children of America are overweight to obese. This is astounding as it was as little as fifteen years ago that doctors began to notice the rise in children's weight. As usual, scare stories abound with calls for the government to intervene with new programs, and/or large-scale social changes. But apart from the over-the-top reactions, there are some basic facts that remain.

Food in America is at an all time high for abundance and as a result, all but the poorest individuals are at no risk of starving. At the same time, convenience foods, fast food establishments and snacks are now available to children just about everywhere they turn. Schools now have vending machines filled with high fat snack foods and soda loaded with sugar.

At the same time, the popularity of computer games, Internet activities, and the just plain talking on cell phones, children (and teens) spend a larger percentage of time being sedentary than in decades past. Now, TV and talking on the phone have been popular teen activities for decades. But in the past, fewer channels meant fewer time in front of the TV. More time was spent in exercise and activities that expended calories. The introduction of the Internet and computer games means more time in the chair and less time exercising.

The end result is that children and teenagers today are on average, heavier that their predecessors. Their diet is also higher in fat, carbohydrates and sugars and less in fiber. The overall final result is a stunning rise in obesity in those under the age of 18.

Body mass is measured a bit differently for children than for adults, which is dependent on of their rapidly changing bodies and higher metabolic rates. Children often experience growth spurts that would skew any measurement that used BMI (Body Mass Index) primarily. BMI ,combined with age and gender, tend to create a more accurate picture.

Borderline obesity in an adult results with a BMI of 30 or greater, however, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) charts designate a child as obese at the 95th percentile on Denver pediatric growth charts. The two are roughly equivalent, but it's necessary to look at the charts for a more careful breakdown.

Percentage of body fat is another important measurement and here again the numbers differ by sex. A boy would be considered obese if identified as one whose body fat was 25% or more of total body weight. For girls the number is a bit higher at 32% of body fat. Amazingly, up to 90% of obese children can suffer from pain syndromes such as migraine. The reasons are not quite clear yet.

For adult males the number is roughly 15% for a healthy, fit individual, but for women the number is around 27%. The reason for this is that women naturally carry more body fat as genetically their bodies are designed for childbearing.

In order to promote healthy lifestyle in children and teens, they must reduce body fat and excess weight through diet and exercise. This will involve lifestyle changes and may be easier for younger children whose habits are not ingrained yet. Teenagers may find it more difficult to accept a lifestyle change of less computers and more exercise when their friends are all plugged in to the internet. But all children learn by example, so adults who are healthy and fit will set the pace for the children in their lives. By starting on the road to good health at a young age, it will be easier to maintain in adulthood.

If you're not worried about the obesity of children, you should be, because it's a growing epidemic that isn't going to go away. In the US 1 in 3 kids are now classed as obese and the UK doesn't fare much better, with a figure of 1 in 4 it is the worst in Europe.

Over weight kids are heading for a lifetime of medical complaints, general poor health and a shortened life expectancy. Medical science has clearly identified links between many chronic illnesses and obesity.

The early onset of type 2 diabetes is an example of changes occurring. It was often referred to as adult onset diabetes, but the age of those affected is dropping and it's now not uncommon to see obese children showing symptoms.

Cardio vascular illnesses and heart conditions are also on the increase and, if left unchecked will also migrate down into childhood illnesses.

The most disturbing fact is it's a self-induced, lifestyle problem that can easily be avoided, with a more sensible approach to diet. It's time for parents to wake up and act responsibly in time to prevent their children becoming obese.

How do you avoid the obesity of children?

Dietary change is the answer. Stopping the junk food and increasing physical activity can solve the problem. Weight gain is primarily the consumption of two many calories and to little physical activity.

Returning an obese child to a normal, healthy weight is a hard task and it's far better to take preventative action now. A healthy (no junk) diet maintained throughout the family will benefit both children and parents alike.

Here is a 7-step plan for weight reduction through improved diet.

1. Replace fizzy drinks and cola's etc with home made lemonade, or even better, water.

2. Introduce more fresh fruit and vegetables into the daily diet. Make smoothies if the kids struggle with some veg. It's amazing what you can hide in a smoothie.

3. Reduce the intake of burgers, hot-dogs, donuts, and any deep-fried foods as they are high in saturated fats and may also contain hydrogenated oils (trans-fats) which increase bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease good cholesterol (HDL).

4. Also avoid: salad dressings, some margarine (olive based is good), and shortening and also most processed foods.

5. Get your kids eating fiber. Fiber is great for keeping you regular, delaying hunger and providing slow release carbohydrate. Rye and whole meal breads are so much better for the digestive system than over refined white breads.

6. Cut down on the candy, it's pretty near 100% sugar (empty calories).

7. Get them eating good fats like olive oil dressing. Flavor it up, with herbs or spices if required. Use it for cooking. Want a cheese sauce? Make a rue using olive oil and whole meal floor, add some semi-skimmed milk and a low fat, herb flavored cheese spread. Easy, tasty and above all healthy.

Petra Peach advises parents to make a start; adopt some of the above tips for your own and your kids diet today and you wont need to worry about the obesity of children. Well at least, not your children.

Obesity can be the direct cause of depression which leads to suicidal stuff and more pills which make you even fatter, being depressed spikes metabolism and makes you even fatter, the quicksand goes on.

This is something I can write about very well as I suffered from the same.

Obesity can be the direct cause of depression which leads to suicidal stuff and more pills which make you even fatter, being depressed spikes metabolism and makes you even fatter, the quicksand goes on.

Let me explain how this whole thing happens.

In the video games, the movies, there is always this lean guy who gets the chicks, considering if your age is anywhere from 12-18, I am kind of sure the girls won’t think ‘how nice the character or heart is’ (maybe some exceptions).

And if you are an obese kid you would never get the confidence to talk much, joke much and the sort in usual cases because your mind will unconciously tell you about the lean model with six packs.

Though I have noted wealthy kids even if obese are less likely to be affected, probably cause they have the car which is shown in those movies or the ads?

So what do you do if your sibling, child is obese and getting depressed?

Answer: LOVE HIM A HELL LOT! AND SHOW IT TO HIM!

Yes, he needs to lose weight and very badly too, but the way to do it is not shout: YOU ARE FAT!

FATTY! CHUBBY! or anything of the sort if you do that, the child will hate you to his death.

So how do you make him lose weight?

1.) Serve him more water every now and then, I know its not easy to be on watch 24/7 but do it!

2.) Ask him if he would like to join any sport, spare the budget to get him in at any cost, like any sport.

3.) Initially expecting him to give an effort is like asking too much for a heavy body but try things like aroma therapy, give him green tea every morning.

4.) play catch with him or anything he likes too, think of how happy he will be once he loses weight and exhaust yourself for his sake.

5.) The Food he gets, make sure its fat free and doesn’t taste like shit either, go for brown bread instead of white, note: fat people are not necessarily fond of eating fatty substances. Search for healthy recipes and try em out, make sure he takes 5-6 meals a day instead of one.

6.) Understand the severity teenage depression can cause, anxiety leads to a really bad heart, I recall getting panic attacks and it felt really bad and in the long term can lead to high blood pressure which means your loved will bite the dust much earlier. There are also chances he may die even way sooner by suicide. Life long obesity also seems to be quite a pain in the butt.

7.) try reflexology, massages which take less effort from his side but result well.

8.) Consult a physiotherapist to get the best and most effortless workout possible during the initial start. Be like his companion, the more you upset him the more does the metabolism get spiked. The more the metabolism gets spiked the less will be his fat burning ability.

9.) When he can’t fit into those cool pants, tell him ‘you will soon, we will work on it’ with a broad loving smile. Don’t blame him for being lazy or the sort.

10.) Get him a dog or a cat feeding and walking which might exhaust him (note: get him a dog or cat only if he wants to have a pet)

11.) fat people may lack stamina but not neccesarily strength so buy him weights which are 50% of his max lifting capacity and make sure he works out in the morning first thing before eating and does complicated stuff which involves him turning but NOT running or the sort which depletes stamina *go for faster reps with less rests*

12.) Buy him supplements if his weight training goes all fine

This may sound barely worth but believe me, it can change a life completely.

I wish I had the things I mentioned above, would have saved me years of depression
