Baby Teeth Information: How To Brush Them

Posted by administrator Wednesday, June 1, 2011 4 comments

Valuable baby teeth information: good dental hygiene schedule is the key element in preventing tooth rot, and for your child's health.

Parents need to take care of the babies' teeth for them. Babies drink mostly milk, and if they take their bottle with them to bed, it can cause a condition called tooth rot. To prevent this from happening the parent needs to start and maintain a good program of dental hygiene.

To start off, let your baby observe you as you brush your teeth. You should not attempt this until your child is old enough to be able to spit out water when you give it to him, and drink it from a cup. Once he can do those things he is ready to begin the process. When you start brushing the baby's teeth, there don't necessarily have to be any teeth present, you can start early rubbing the baby's gums with the toothbrush and no toothpaste - but this is not really necessary since the child will learn later anyway.

When you choose a toothbrush for the baby make sure it is small, very soft, and has longer bristles in the front then at the back. This will ensure that even the hard to reach places will be reached in your baby's mouth. When you choose the toothpaste, choose any brand that has fluoride in it. You should use a low flouride level children's toothpaste. It isn't necessary to buy the expensive baby formulae since they contain the same things and in my experience the baby doesn't like the taste of the baby types of toothpaste.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to support a restoration for a missing tooth or teeth, helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. The dental implant procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry, but also is considered a form of cosmetic dentistry.

People who have lost teeth might feel too self-conscious to smile or talk. Additionally, biting irregularities caused by tooth loss can have a negative effect on eating habits, leading to secondary health problems like malnutrition.

By replacing missing tooth roots, dental implants provide people with the strength and stability required to eat all the foods they love, without struggling to chew. Additionally, dental implants stimulate and maintain jaw bone, preventing bone loss and helping to maintain facial features.

Tooth Loss

Teeth are lost because of:

  •     Tooth decay
  •     Root canal failure
  •     Gum disease (Periodontitis)
  •     Trauma to the mouth (tooth injury)
  •     Excessive wear and tear
  •     Congenital defects

Dental Implants: Consultation, Placement, and Recovery

To determine if implants are right for you, a consultation with your dentist, oral surgeon, and/or periodontist or prosthodontist is needed. During this appointment, your dental professional will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums and evaluate bone density and quantity. This may involve X-rays and computer tomography scans (CT scans) to ensure there is sufficient bone structure for placing the implant(s), and to determine exactly where the implant should be placed.

Based on the condition of your oral tissues, oral hygiene and personal habits, and commitment to follow aftercare instructions, your dentist will advise you of the most appropriate dental implant treatment plan. Some patients with insufficient bone or gum tissue require bone or soft tissue grafts and/or the use of small diameter implants (also called mini implants).

Depending on your situation, your dental professional will advise you of how long the entire treatment process will take, how many appointments will be necessary and what you can expect after each procedure. During the consultation, options for local anesthesia (to numb the affected and surrounding areas) and sedation dentistry, if necessary, also will be discussed.
The Dental Implant Placement Procedure

Today's dental implant restorations are virtually indistinguishable from other teeth. This appearance is aided in part by the structural and functional connection between the dental implant and the living bone. Implants are typically placed in a single sitting but require a period of osseointegration.

Osseointegration is the process by which the dental implant anchors to the jaw bone. Osseointegrated implants are the most commonly used and successful type of dental implant. An osseointegrated implant takes anywhere from three to six months to anchor and heal, at which point your dentist can complete the procedure by placing a crown restoration. If osseointegration does not occur, the implant will fail.

Dental implantation, which is performed to replace missing teeth, can be done any time after adolescence or when bone growth is complete. Certain medical conditions, such as active diabetes, cancer or periodontal disease, may require additional treatment before the implant procedure can be performed.

Detailed procedural steps are as follows:

Preparing the Jaw for Implantation: A dental implant restoration is commonly composed of a titanium material screw and a crown. A small-diameter hole (pilot hole) is drilled at edentulous (where there is no tooth) jaw sites in order to guide the titanium screw that holds a dental implant in place. To avoid damaging vital jaw and face structures like the inferior alveolar nerve in the mandible (lower jaw), a dentist must use great skill and expertise when boring the pilot hole and sizing the jaw bone. In many instances dentists use surgical guides created based on the CT scans when placing the dental implants.

Gingival Sculpting
Reinvent your smile with gum tissue contouring.

Placement of the Implant: After the initial pilot hole has been drilled into the appropriate jaw site, it is slowly widened to allow placement of the implant screw. Once in place, surrounding gum tissue is secured over the implant and a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the site to heal and osseointegration to occur. After up to six months of healing, your dentist will uncover the implant and attach an abutment (which holds the crown or tooth-like replacement) to the implant. In some cases, the abutment may be attached during the initial procedure. When the abutment is in place, your dentist then will create a temporary crown. The temporary crown serves as a template around which the gum grows and shapes itself in a natural way. The process is completed when the temporary crown is replaced with a permanent crown.

Dental Implants Recovery

Dental implant recovery depends on a number of factors, including the various procedures required to complete your treatment. However, it is generally recognized that once an implant has been placed, maintaining diligent oral hygiene habits is required to ensure proper fusing of the implant and bone structure. If cared for properly, an implant restoration can remain in place for more than 40 years.

After the initial surgical procedure, discomfort should be minimal. Swelling of your gums and face may occur, as well as minor bleeding and bruising of the implant site. Prescription pain medications may be prescribed by your dentist to relieve any pain or discomfort you feel after the procedure.

Invisalign Express
Are you a candidate for shorter-duration Invisalign?

Healing from the surgical procedure to place the dental implant(s) takes up to six months, while the fitting and seating of the crown(s) can take up to two months. Again, this timeframe depends on individual cases and treatments. Follow-up appointments with your treatment coordinators are essential for monitoring your progress.

Implant Surgery Follow-up and Aftercare

For five to seven days after surgery, your diet should be restricted to soft foods. If stitches are present, they may need to be removed by your dentist; however, self-dissolving stitches that do not require removal are typically used.

If provisional restorations were placed along with the dental implant, it will be important to clean them as you would your natural teeth to ensure the best possible healing and fusing of the implant.
find a local dentist

Failure to floss and brush is a leading cause of implant failure, and infection can occur if the implant and surrounding areas are not cleaned properly. Smoking also is attributed to high failure rates with dental implants and should be avoided following implant procedures.

Quite naturally, as we progress through life, we begin to notice that our skin does not look as smooth and beautiful as it once was. Take out any old family photo album, look back at some cherished memories, and the one thing we all have to face, inevitably, are the signs of aging. Of course, there are thousands of commercially developed anti aging skincare solutions offered to us everyday by shopping channels, glamour magazines and TV advertising, all promising to solve our dilemma of how to look younger - for the right price. But actually, the solution could be right under our noses - and at a fraction of the price.

You can actually keep your credit cards tucked safely away and use effective anti aging solutions that you create yourself. Using all-natural ingredients you can use simple 'recipes' to 'cook up' skincare treatments that will produce much more pleasing results than the latest cream you'll find that's been sitting around on your favorite department store shelf. Why? Well, the power of the cream will actually decrease because of the stabilizers and additives used to prolong its shelf life.

For example, you can use recipes that include fruits such as grapefruits, lemons and limes to make your own natural skincare product. They are all rich in vitamin C, totally fresh, and produce anti oxidants that will protect and repair your skin. Whilst vitamin C plays a crucial role in providing the skin with protection from future damage, it must be fresh. It has an inordinately short shelf life, so must be absolutely fresh to retain its full protection capabilities. Otherwise, it will actually have little or no beneficial effect.

So what are some of the benefits of making your own natural anti aging products?

* Provides your skin with nourishment, through powerful nutrients and antioxidants that stimulate the regeneration of cells

* Herbal natural rejuvenating properties fight against degeneration of your skin by stimulating healing and production of collagen

* Offers powerful antioxidant protection for your skin against signs of aging, damage and deterioration

* Uses common everyday ingredients found in your kitchen

* The comforting knowledge that only fresh products are being applied to your skin

* Slashes the cost of skincare when compared to expensive store-bought products.

You may think to yourself "I simply don't have the time to make my own products - that's why I go to the shops". The truth is, following the right guide and recipes, none of the various natural anti aging methods will take long to create - and you don't need to have any outstanding kitchen or culinary skills to make them. Investing in an affordable skincare recipe book today could save you hundreds of dollars spent on commercial products, and provide some fun along the way.

Bowel cancer causes and symptoms

Posted by administrator Thursday, May 26, 2011 0 comments

What causes bowel cancer?

We don't really know what causes bowel cancer, although diet is one of the main suspects. Most bowel cancers start as harmless growths (polyps) that turn into tumours. Just why a polyp starts to grow, or why one becomes cancerous, isn't known.
What we do know is that people who've had diseases that inflame the bowel for a long time are more likely to get bowel cancer than other people. So are people who've had close family members (such as parents, brothers or sisters) with bowel cancer, especially if they got it while aged under 50.
And, like most cancers, it's much more common in people over 50 than in younger people. You can't catch it from someone else, or pass it on to someone else if you have it.

How can I avoid bowel cancer?

What a person eats is probably important. Certainly, fewer people get it in countries where they eat lots of fruit, vegetables and cereal foods, and not much meat and animal fat. It's because of these clues and other research that most scientists think this sort of diet is good for you and diets rich in fruit and vegetables, and low in fat, could help to reduce your chance of developing bowel cancer.
Eating 2 pieces of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables a day could reduce your overall risk of cancer. This is part of a healthy diet for preventing heart disease too.
People who don't get much exercise also have a higher risk of bowel cancer. So keep active. That's something else that's good for your health in all sorts of ways.

What are the warning signs?

If you're over 50, or there has been bowel cancer in your family, it's a good idea to talk to your GP about getting checked, even if you don't have symptoms. Remember, the earlier bowel cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances that treatment will be successful.
You can't help getting older, and you can't help it if other people in your family had bowel cancer. But there are other things you can do.
The most common signs of bowel cancer are a change in how often you go to the toilet (doctors call this 'bowel habits') that doesn't return to normal after a couple of weeks. Faeces may be looser than usual, like diarrhoea, and you may find yourself going to the toilet more often. You may also be constipated or find that you feel you haven't finished after going to the toilet, or that you feel like going, but nothing happens.

Bleeding from the anus (rectal bleeding)

Blood in the faeces is usually caused by piles (haemorrhoids). Piles are unpleasant and should be treated, but they aren't dangerous. They usually have other symptoms as well as bleeding. They can be sore or itchy, and there are often little lumps around the rim of the anus that you can feel. But even if you have symptoms of piles, you should see a doctor if there's blood in your faeces.
Sometimes your doctor may actually be able to feel a growth in your abdomen. And there can be pain in the abdomen, particularly in older people. These symptoms can be caused by all sorts of things (rectal bleeding is quite common, and changes such as diarrhoea or constipation even more so) and in most cases it won't be cancer.
But if you have symptoms like these, see your doctor.
There is also a test you can buy at the chemist and do yourself at home to check for blood in your faeces (you can't usually see a small amount of dark blood). It's called the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), and it's much simpler than its name (occult just means 'hidden'). With the test you put a bit of 3 different bowel motions on slides or cards that you take to your doctor or back to the chemist to be sent away for analysis. With some kits, you do the testing yourself at home.
There are several types of FOBT. Some won't work properly unless you avoid certain foods for several days beforehand. Follow the instructions that come with whichever FOBT you buy.
The test finds even tiny amounts of blood in your faeces. Blood in the faeces could have come from a cancer in the bowel. It doesn't mean you do have bowel cancer. Most people who have blood in their faeces have it for some other reason. But in a few cases it will be cancer.
FOBT won't catch every bowel cancer. But by doing it regularly, you increase your chances of picking it up early. There's a 90 per cent chance that bowel cancer can be cured if it's found early enough. So if you have a positive result, talk it over with your doctor.
If you're over 50, it's a good idea to do a FOBT at least every 2 years. Every year is even better. If you have a family history of bowel cancer you could be at higher risk, even if you're under 50. Talk to your doctor about it. They may want to do a colonoscopy every 5 years, to look very carefully for early bowel cancers.

There are many different methods available for your doctor to treat bone cancer. The best treatment is based on the type of bone cancer, the location of the cancer, how aggressive the cancer is, and whether or not the cancer has invaded surrounding or distant tissues (metastasized). There are three main types of treatment for bone cancer: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. These can be used either individually or combined with each other.
Surgery is often used to treat bone cancer. The goal of surgery is usually to remove the entire tumor and a surrounding area of normal bone. After the tumor has been removed, a pathologist examines it to determine if there is normal bone completely surrounding the tumor. If a portion of the cancer is left behind, it can continue to grow and spread, requiring further treatment. If the tumor specimen has normal cells completely surrounding it, there is a much better chance that the entire tumor has been removed and less chance for recurrence. Historically, amputations were frequently used to remove bone cancer. Newer techniques have decreased the need for amputation. In many cases, the tumor can be removed with a rim of normal bone without the need for an amputation. Depending on the amount of bone removed, the surgeon will replace something in its location. For smaller areas, this may be either bone cement or a bone graft from another place in your body or from the bone bank. For larger areas, the surgeon may place larger grafts from the bone bank or metal implants. Some of these metal implants have the ability to lengthen when used in growing children.
You may be referred to a medical oncologist for chemotherapy. This is the use of various medications used to try to stop the growth of the cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be used prior to surgery to try to shrink the bone tumor to make surgery easier. It can also be used after surgery to try to kill any remaining cancer cells left following surgery.
You could also be referred to a radiation oncologist for radiation therapy. The radiation therapy uses high-energy X-ray aimed at the site of the cancer to try to kill the cancer cells. This treatment is given in small doses daily over a period of days to months. As with chemotherapy, radiation therapy can be used either before or after a potential surgery, depending on the specific type of cancer.

ome common eye injuries, such as deep puncture wounds from accidents, could require immediate treatment or surgery to prevent permanent eye damage resulting in vision loss.
Minor surface scratches, on the other hand, may need only simple monitoring after an initial visit to the eye doctor to make sure complications such as eye infections don't occur.
This guide to common eye injuries can help you determine your next step following an accident, especially if you are in an emergency situation. Remember also that common sense safety precautions such as wearing safety goggles or glasses may be your best approach to preventing eye injuries altogether and maintaining healthy vision for a lifetime.
Common conditions associated with eye injury and trauma include:

Scratched Eye (Corneal Abrasion)

Common causes of abrasions to the eye's surface (corneal abrasions) are getting poked in the eye or rubbing the eye when a foreign body is present, such as dust or sand. Corneal abrasions are very uncomfortable and cause severe sensitivity to light.
If you know something has scratched your eye, it's very important to see your eye doctor or an emergency room/urgent care center to seek treatment for your eye injury.
Scratches also can make your eye susceptible to infection from bacteria or a fungus. Certain types of bacteria and fungi can enter the eye through a scratch and cause serious harm in as little as 24 hours. Even blindness can result. This is especially true if whatever scratched your eye is dirty or contaminated.
Remember also that infections from eye injuries such as scratches can originate from unexpected sources such as a baby's fingernails or tree branches.
If you have a scratched eye, don't rub it. And don't patch your eye, either. Bacteria like dark, warm places to grow, and a patch might provide the ideal environment. Simply keep the eye closed or loosely tape a paper cup or eye shield over it. See your doctor as soon as possible to check out this type of eye injury.

Penetrating or Foreign Objects in the Eye

If a foreign object such as metal or a fish hook penetrates your eye, visit the emergency room/urgent care center right away. You could cause even more injury to your eye if you attempt to remove the object yourself or if you rub your eye.
If possible, try loosely taping a paper cup or eye shield over your eye for protection; then seek help.
Your eye also may have corneal foreign bodies that are small, sharp pieces of a substance (usually metal) that have become embedded in the eye's surface (cornea), but have not penetrated into the interior of the eye.
Metal foreign bodies can quickly form a rust ring and a significant scar. Your eye doctor should remove these foreign bodies as soon as possible.

Caustic Foreign Substance in the Eye (Chemical Burn)

Getting unexpectedly splashed or sprayed in the eye by substances other than clean, harmless water can be scary. Some substances burn or sting but are fairly harmless in the long run, while others can cause serious injury. The basic makeup of the chemical involved can make a lot of difference, such as:
A splash in the eye by anything other than clean water can be scary. Some substances burn or sting but are harmless in the long run; others can cause serious injury.
  • Acid. As a general rule, acids can cause considerable redness and burning but can be washed out fairly easily.
  • Alkali. Substances or chemicals that are basic (alkali) are much more serious but may not seem so because they don't cause as much immediate eye pain or redness as acids. Some examples of alkali substances are oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and even chalk dust.
Chemical exposures and burns are usually caused by a splash of liquid getting in your eye. But they can be caused in other ways as well, such as by rubbing your eyes and transferring a chemical from your hands to your eyes or by getting sprayed in the eye by hair spray or other aerosols.
If you're splashed in the eye, put your head under a steady stream of barely warm tap water for about 15 minutes. Just let it run into your eye and down your face. Then call your eye doctor or an emergency room/urgent care center to see what is recommended for your eye injury. Tell the person on the phone exactly what kind of substance got into your eye and what you've done about it.
If you know your eye is at risk because it's extraordinarily red or blurry, then just go immediately to your eye doctor or an emergency room or urgent care center after you've rinsed it with water. You can put a cool, moist compress or an ice pack on your eye, but don't rub it.
Depending on the substance, the effects of chemical exposures causing eye injuries can range from minor irritation to serious eye damage and even blindness.

Top: Black eyes are common eye injuries and often can be treated with an ice pack to reduce swelling. Bottom: Eye lacerations may require immediate emergency care.

Eye Swelling

Eye swelling or puffiness can result from being struck in the eye such as from a baseball moving at a high speed. The best immediate treatment for this type of eye injury is an ice pack.
You may have a simple black eye (bruising around the eye), but you should see an eye doctor to make sure there's no internal damage.

Subconjunctival Hemorrhages (Eye Bleeding)

This eye injury usually looks worse than it really is. A subconjunctival hemorrhage involves leakage of blood from one or more breaks in a blood vessel that lies between the white of the eye (sclera) and its clear covering (conjunctiva).
Subconjunctival hemorrhages are quite common and can occur from even minor injury to the eye. They may be limited to a small sector of the eye, or they can extend over the entire eye, making the white sclera appear bright red.
A subconjunctival hemorrhage is painless and does not cause temporary or permanent vision loss. No treatment is required. Over the course of several weeks, the blood will clear and the eye will return to a normal appearance.

Traumatic Iritis

Traumatic iritis is inflammation of the colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil (iris) and occurs after an eye injury. Traumatic iritis can be caused by a poke in the eye or a blow to the eye from a blunt object, such as a ball or a hand.
Traumatic iritis usually requires treatment. Even with medical treatment, there is a risk of permanent decreased vision.

Hyphemas and Orbital Blowout Fractures

A hyphema (high-FEE-mah) is bleeding in the anterior chamber of the eye, the space between the cornea and the iris. Orbital blowout fractures are cracks or breaks in the facial bones surrounding the eye.
Hyphemas and blowout fractures are serious eye injuries and medical emergencies. They are caused by significant blunt force trauma to the eye and face, such as getting hit by a bat, baseball, hockey stick or puck, or getting kicked in the face.

Steps To Take in Case of Eye Injury

If you have any eye injury, contact your eye care practitioner immediately for advice.
Most eye doctors have emergency contact numbers for injuries that occur after normal business hours or on weekends.
In certain extreme situations such as a penetrating eye injury or an eye knocked out of the socket, it may be better to get to the hospital immediately without taking the time to try calling anyone.
Once you are in the care of a doctor, be sure to mention if you wear contact lenses so you can be advised whether to leave them in or remove them.
Depending on the type of eye injury, the doctor may want you to flush your eye with water or saline solution. In more serious situations, you may need surgery.
Treat all eye injuries as potential emergencies, and never hesitate to contact or see an eye doctor immediately. Don't take risks with your eyesight. Remember, you have only one pair of eyes
