6 Tips For Finding "SAFE" Nutritional Supplements

Posted by administrator Thursday, July 17, 2008

Who has the responsibility for ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe? By law (DSHEA), the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that its dietary supplement products are safe before they are marketed. Unlike drug products that must be proven safe and effective for their intended use before marketing, there are no provisions in the law for FDA to "approve" dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they reach the consumer. Also unlike drug products, manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements are not currently required by law to record, investigate or forward to FDA any reports they receive of injuries or illnesses that may be related to the use of their products. Under DSHEA, once the product is marketed, FDA has the responsibility for showing that a dietary supplement is "unsafe," before it can take action to restrict the product's use or removal from the marketplace. - Source: Excerpted from Overview of Dietary Supplements January 2001

How many times have we seen a great new supplement or product swarm the market place just to find out that just a few years later it's killing people? So how do we know if a product is safe and effective?

6 tips for finding a safe and effective Nutritional Supplements.

1. Natural Sources

All over the world there are fine ingredients from nature. But just as important as what is put in your product is what is kept out. Your product should be free of preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, or any other artificial things that don't belong there.

2. Purity Testing

The absolute purity of your ingredients is a must. No ifs, ands, or buts. Just for example, new botanical ingredients should go through extensive third-party testing for purity, including testing potential contaminants.

3. Proven Potency and Clinical Performance

What you read on the label should be what's in the bottle. Supplements should contain precise amounts of active phytonutrients for the most health benefits. But don't just take their word for it. Look for published studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals that show exactly that.

4. State-Of-the-Art Manufacturing

The way your products are made is just as important as what is put into them. Cutting edge production facilities and patented processes are designed for the highest quality possible. And just to be sure, there should be extensive quality control tests each year.

5. Demonstrated Benefits

Look for companies that support athletes not paid endorsements. Look for stability and how long the company has been around. Also, look for a large consumer base who use the products in their everyday lives to achieve great things.

6. Guaranteed Satisfaction

Make sure they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If for any reason, you aren't totally satisfied with something you get you should be able to get a full refund easily.
